The Buypass Smart Card is based on the MULTOS operating system and smart card platform. MULTOS is a secure, multi-application smart card platform based on open specifications. MULTOS allows a large number of applications to live side by side on the same smart card. Applications can be downloaded onto the card in a secure manner, also after the smart card has been issued.

The MULTOS operating system ensures that during execution the applications are logically separated from one another via internal firewalls, which allows secure storage of PIN codes and keys within individual applications. The MULTOS platforms have been evaluated and certified in accordance with ITSEC E6, which is the highest level of security for this type of product.

Buypass is both an issuer of MULTOS-based smart cards and a vendor of the MULTOS applications that constitute the programmes that are executed on the smart card. Buypass develops MULTOS applications and other solutions and services that make use of smart cards in accordance with international standards.

Buypass has developed flexible ID solutions based on a combination of symmetric and asymmetric cryptography using MULTOS technology. These range from simple ID solutions based on symmetric cryptography to more complex Public Key Infrastructure-based solutions using qualified as well as locally issued certificates on a single smart card.
